abstract

landfilling is an ultimate fate of any municipal solid waste management system, and it is a no alternative choice for disposal of municipal solid waste. the major environmental concerns associated with landfilling of wastes are related to the leachate generation and eventual discharge of leachate into the environment. leachate quality is formed due to aerobic and anaerobic processes taking place in landfill. during aerobic decomposition of wastes, which is short in period, organic matters are converted to co2, h20 and volatile acids. anaerobic decompositon of wastes takes place in three phases, and methane, carbon dioxid, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide gases are generated. in order to prevent leachate from percolation to ground water, natural or synthetic liners must be constructed at the bottom of landfill. babol municipal landfill is located in angelsi region, 30 km southwest of babol with general slope of 14%. the total area of this site is 4 hectare. yearly average municipal soild waste generation of babol is 136 mertic tonne. so the life time of this site is estimated to be 4 years. generation rate of primary leachate in this landfill is about 11.8m3 per day, for waste field capacity of 0.6 cm/cm and moisture content of 70%. steress due to vehicle is negligible (0.001492 kg/cm). leachate management system in bobal municipal landfill is composed of three elements leachate trench with low permeability of k=10 cm/sec, comprised of sand with 16-32 mm in diametere and depth of 30cm. thus 10500m3 of sand is used to construct these trenches in 3.5 ha of use full area available for landfilling. leachate collection system is made of cement pipes with 15 cm in dimeter. these pipes are especially prepared for this purpose. and finally a liner made of local clay compacted in thickness of one meter, so the maximum conductivity of this liner was in the order of mangitude of 10 cm/sec.

Sanitary Landfill Method of Solid Waste Disposal

IN T R O D U C T IO N Reduced to its simplest terms, solid waste collection and disposal consists of the acceptance of the solid waste from processes of human life, the transportation of such material to disposal sites, and the process ing and disposal of the material so that nuisances are not created. The entire process must be carried out in such a manner that the public health of the commun...

Groundwater Pollution by Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate: A Case Study of Okhla Landfill Delhi

The large number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and the many hazardous materials which they contain pose a serious threat to both surrounding environment and human populations. Once waste is deposited at the landfill, pollution can arise from the percolation of leachate to the porous ground surface. Contamination of groundwater by such leachate renders it and the associated aquifer un...

uranium in municipal solid waste landfill leachate

landfill leachates and leachate sediments were investigated in order to survey the discharge of uranium (u) from municipal solid waste (msw) landfills and municipal solid waste incinerator (mswi) bottom ash landfills. concentrations of u in the leachates were as high as or higher than concentrations of cd, a metal more often discussed when considering the environmental effects of landfill leach...

Sanitary aspect of using partially treated landfill leachate as a water source in green waste composting.

Shredded green wastes were composted in windrows, at the Harewood Whin landfill, near the city of York, in West Yorkshire, UK. Landfill leachate were added twice during the second and fourth week of the process in two piles. One pile was turned once every week for eight weeks and the other was turned twice, during the same period. Each time approximately, 2 m3 of leachate was added, into each p...

Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate Treatment Efficiency by Leachate Pollution Index

Leachate pollution index (LPI) value can be used as a tool to assess the leachate pollution potential of landfill sites particularly at places where there is a high risk of leachate migration and pollution of groundwater and thus can help to take necessary decisions as deem fit. In this paper, leachate treatment efficiency was evaluated on the basis of LPI value of leachate before and after tre...

Sanitary Quality of Soil in and near Municipal Waste Landfill Sites

The present study was aimed at determining the relationship between the operation of municipal landfills and the fluctuations of bacterial indicators of the sanitary quality of soil. Soil samples were collected at monthly intervals from May 2010 to April 2011 at ten sampling sites located on the premises and in vicinity of the reclaimed Municipal Landfill Site (MLS) and the new Municipal Solid ...
